Clear day so we ventured out. Visited the Greene County History Museum and the Old Gaol "Jail". Pretty interesting stuff. Creek native Americans lived on this land in the 1500's. In 1786 the Georgia legislature established Greene County. Forts were built every 18 miles to protect the settlers. They cleared the land to plant crops. By 1850 cotton was king and Greene County was the most prosperous regions of the US. 56 percent of households owned slaves. We have been told by 2 curators that because of years of cotton farming the soil in this area has been depleated and will only support grass and pine trees. Such a shame.

The old jail was quite interesting. Shackles, dungeon like doors, gallows.

Lunch and football with the Elks.
