1776, Americans adopted the first written constitution in the history of the world. Continental Congress urged colonies to supress royal authority. Even before the Declaration of Independence, several colonies had adopted state constitutions. Pictured us the chain of states signifying unity.

July 9, 1776 British fleet arrived in New York harbor. By Nov. 1776 the British controlled Western Long Island, Manhattan Island, Staten Island and the surrounding Hudson Valley.
