Visited Fort Stanwix in Rome New York.
Original inhabitants were indigenous Haudenosaunee (6 nations-Shawnee, Seneca, Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga). The fort was built on the trail between the Mohawk River and the Wood Creek and linked the Atlantic Ocean to Lake Ontario.
Originally a British Fort, during the French and Indian War in 1754, the French and allies began destroying forts in the Mohawk Valley. In 1758 Brig.Gen. John Stanwix was ordered ro rebuild this fort to end French invasions. Abandoned in 1768, the fortwas rebuilt 1776 by order of the Continental Congress to protect the northwest border. In 1777 British troops laid seige but the fortwas heavily garrisoned and with the arrival of reinforcements, led by Benedict Arnold, the British retreated. Fire destroyed the fort in 1781 and the city of Rome grew around the site. The fort was rebuilt in 1976 and is now a national park and museum. Last pic just a beautiful church nearby.
