Visited Linville Caverns today. Bought tickets but had a wait for tour so journeyed up the mountain and found the cutest old fashioned restaurant. The food was outstanding! Back down for our tour. So the cavern is 700' deep into the mountain. Was discovered in 1822. There is a stream running inside with trout in it. Deserters used the cavern during the civil war. There is a bottomless pit of water but we were not able to see that section. The cavern is mostly shady dolomite with minerals (copper, manganese,) dripped onto the walls over time. There was a flood in 1940 which destroyed most of the stalactites but the cavern is still active and rebuilding. Great scenes and learning!
