Georgia 2-5-2024

Today we visited 2 more forts-Firt James Jackson and Fort Pulaski. Jackson was built in 1808 and held 8 canons. Pictured is a 12 lb mountain Howitzer which still fires. Jackson is at the narrowest point of the Savannah River. Pulaski was built 1848 under the direction of Robert E. Lee. Both were built to defend Savannah along with Fort McCallister. In 1862 the Union set up a battery in nearby Tybee island (under cover of nite). They then asked Fort Pulaski to surrender-Confederates refused and the battle ensued. 10-1/2 hrs and the Union barrage broke thru the southwest corner of the fort. Pulaski's commander feared the magazine might be ignited so he surrendered. April 1862. Both forts taken by Sherman Dec 1864.

Also saw this huge container ship and an egret.
